Robert ‘Tom’ Niederer
1958 ~ 2018
Captain Tom Niederer, age 59, passed away unexpectedly on August 02, 2018. His passing was related to an automobile accident a few months ago.
Born to Bob and Diane Niederer on October 19, 1958. Tom grew up in Bloomington, Minnesota and graduated from Jefferson High School. After high school Tom pursued an aviation education at the University of North Dakota, graduating with an Aviation Sciences degree.
Tom built his flight time working for a number of general aviation operators including Lake Powell Air Service. He was hired by Republic Airlines in October 1983. After being laid off from Republic in 1984, Tom was hired by Northwest Airlines on November 09, 1984. During his Northwest career Tom flew captain positions on the 727, DC-10 and the A-330. Rather fittingly, Tom flew the last scheduled passenger 727 flight. Unfortunately for a man who loved to fly, he was retired after having been on long term disability (10+ years).
Tom was married to Janet with whom he had two sons and a daughter. His hobbies were sports, classic cars, airplanes and boats, and especially spending time at a cabin with his family whom he adored. He will be remembered as a loving and compassionate caregiver, a generous husband and father, and friend to many. Many remember Tom for “…..taking the time to spend time with friends and family; he really cared about all that he came in contact with.”
Preceded in death by brother Jim. He is survived by his wife Janet; sons Bobby and Jacob; daughter Claire; parents Bob and Diane Niederer; sister-in-law Kate Niederer; brother John (Chris); sister Suzanne Slattery (Matt Kuusisto); many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
